President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, who died on Friday at the age of 89. In a heartfelt condolence message, the President described the late jurist as a man of exceptional integrity and rare courage who served Nigeria with honor.

Tinubu noted with regret that Justice Uwais passed away on the same day Muslims celebrated Eid al-Adha, adding a solemn note to the religious holiday.

A Distinguished Career in Nigeria's Judiciary

Reflecting on Uwais' career, President Tinubu highlighted how the late Chief Justice navigated the judiciary through challenging periods in Nigeria's history with "tact, patience, and a sense of duty." He particularly commended Justice Uwais' stabilizing role during the transition to democracy, noting that he had the historic honor of swearing in Nigeria's democratically elected president on May 29, 1999, ushering in the current democratic dispensation.

"Not surprisingly, Justice Uwais led the panel to produce a critical report that contained a detailed prognosis of our electoral system. In active service and retirement, the late Justice Uwais maintained a dignified persona, earning him respect beyond his immediate constituency," Tinubu stated in his message.

Contributions to Electoral Reform

The President also recalled how, even after retirement, Justice Uwais continued to serve the nation when the Federal Government appointed him to head a panel investigating Nigeria's electoral conduct. According to Tinubu, Uwais' personal integrity and distinguished pedigree made him the ideal person for this critical assignment.

The panel's report, which provided a comprehensive analysis of Nigeria's electoral system, remains a significant contribution to the country's democratic journey.

Justice Uwais will be remembered not only for his judicial excellence but also for maintaining a dignified persona throughout his career and retirement, earning him widespread respect across various sectors of Nigerian society.
