The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a strong appeal to Nigeria's political leaders, urging them to take immediate action to address the nation's mounting challenges during this year's Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
In a statement released to mark the Sallah celebration, Northern CAN emphasized the need for leaders to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate genuine commitment to their constitutional and moral responsibilities in tackling insecurity, economic hardship, and growing social unrest.
Call for Decisive Leadership
The statement, signed by Northern CAN Chairman Rev. Joseph John Hayab, highlighted that the current atmosphere of fear and uncertainty is emboldening enemies of peace and undermining national unity.
"Our leaders must act in obedience to their constitutional duty and moral obligation to protect the lives and dignity of every Nigerian," the statement read.
The Christian body drew parallels between the symbolic message of Eid-el-Kabir—which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice for God—and the need for political leaders to make meaningful sacrifices for national unity and progress.
This season calls for both leaders and citizens to demonstrate renewed faith, unity, and responsibility toward the nation.
Concerns Over Insecurity and Economic Instability
Northern CAN expressed deep concern over worsening insecurity and economic instability, noting that millions of Nigerians are currently living in fear and despair. The association criticized the government's response, stating that words alone are insufficient and calling for visible, impactful actions to restore public confidence and heal national divisions.
The statement also called on all Nigerians to use the solemn occasion of Eid-el-Kabir to pray for peace and unity, while showing compassion to the less privileged.
Northern CAN extended heartfelt Eid-el-Kabir greetings to the Muslim Ummah, emphasizing the importance of interfaith harmony during this significant religious observance.
