Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as impossible to profess loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while remaining in an opposition party.

The governor made this declaration during his official defection ceremony held at the Government House on Friday, June 6, 2025, ending months of speculation about his political future.

Why Governor Eno Joined APC

During his address, Governor Eno emphasized that his decision came after extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state. He explained that his move was not from a position of weakness but strength, aiming to connect Akwa Ibom State more directly to the federal government.

"I have decided to move to the APC. I make bold to say categorically that I have changed my political affiliations, but my values and moral fiber remain the same," Eno stated. "I can't be visiting the president in the night and be saying something else in the day. That's why I've decided to join the train of the president, to support him so I will not be accused of anti-party activities."

The governor also noted that while he appreciates the PDP's support during his election, this move represents a "defining moment" for his administration and the state.

High-Profile Support for the Defection

The defection ceremony was attended by several APC governors, including those from Edo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Cross River, Ebonyi, Lagos, Delta, and Imo States. Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, speaking on behalf of the visiting governors, welcomed Eno to the APC fold.

"We have a new trajectory of development and growth in the country. Other presidents left with learners' permits, but Mr. President has the driver's license, and he is driving us well," Uzodinma remarked.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by his wife Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, commended Governor Eno for his decision while warning him to prepare for criticism.

"They will malign and abuse you that you will be surprised, but because God is with you, fear no one. You have a lion in Mr. President and another lion in the person of Mr. Senate President," she said.

Implications for Akwa Ibom Politics

This defection marks a significant shift in Akwa Ibom's political landscape, as the state has been under PDP control since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999. Governor Eno has demanded total loyalty from his appointees, describing them as his "first 11" and stating that their loyalty is non-negotiable.

The governor also called on all Akwa Ibom citizens, particularly APC members, to unite behind his administration. "Let us shield our differences as we begin to renew and build together and ensure we return our president in 2027," he urged.

However, not all state officials appear to be following the governor's move. Reports indicate that the state's Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, has resigned from his position, refusing to leave the PDP for the APC.
