Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), while simultaneously declaring his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu's second term ambition.
The governor made this declaration during his formal defection ceremony held at the State House in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Friday, June 6, 2025.
"No Apologies" for Supporting Tinubu
Speaking at the event, Governor Eno emphasized his long-standing admiration for President Tinubu's leadership style, dating back to when Tinubu served as Lagos State Governor.
"As a young professional working in Lagos while he was the governor, I have always admired his style of leadership with focus and vision," Eno stated. "I have no doubt this vigour and renewed energy is being applied to the nation today."
The governor was unequivocal about his position regarding the 2027 presidential election, declaring, "I have no apology whatsoever for supporting President Tinubu for a second term in office, to complete the reforms he has started."
Political Realignment in Akwa Ibom
In a related statement, Governor Eno explained the rationale behind his defection, noting that he couldn't profess love for President Tinubu without joining his political party. This move represents a significant shift in the political landscape of Akwa Ibom State, which has traditionally been a PDP stronghold.
The defection comes amid growing political realignments across Nigeria as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections. Political analysts suggest this could potentially strengthen APC's position in the South-South region, where the party has historically struggled to gain significant electoral foothold.
Governor Eno's move also signals potential shifts in the balance of power within Nigeria's political landscape as preparations for the 2027 elections begin to take shape.
