Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Yelwata on Thursday staged a protest in Makurdi, blocking a major road near the International Market over what they described as deteriorating conditions in their camp.

The demonstrators, who caused significant traffic congestion, alleged severe hunger, neglect, and diversion of relief materials meant for their welfare by officials managing the camp.

Deaths and Starvation Claims

According to the protesters, at least two people have recently died in the camp due to starvation and poor health conditions. The IDPs expressed frustration over their living situation, with many forced to sleep on bare floors.

"There's no food, our children are starving, we sleep on the floor, and mosquitoes are almost killing us," lamented a female protester holding a placard. "We are suffering, and people are dying."

Allegations of Aid Diversion

The IDPs made serious allegations regarding the diversion of donated relief materials. They claimed that food items and mattresses, including those reportedly donated by Dr. Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, never reached the intended beneficiaries.

The protesters called on the Benue State Government and humanitarian agencies to investigate these claims and ensure transparency in aid distribution.

As of press time, government officials had not issued any formal statement regarding the protest or the allegations made by the IDPs.

The Yelwata crisis has displaced numerous residents, with the Catholic Church recently holding a prayer walk in honor of attack victims. The situation continues to draw attention to humanitarian concerns in Benue State.
