Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a ceremony held in Uyo, the state capital, on Friday.
The defection comes just days after Governor Eno hinted at his intention to switch political allegiance during a town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi, where he stated that "it is time to move" and align the state with the ruling party at the federal level.
According to the governor, his decision to join the APC was made after extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state.
APC Governors Welcome Eno
Several APC governors were present at the defection ceremony to officially welcome Governor Eno into their fold. Notable among them were the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; and Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
Other governors in attendance included Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State.
This political realignment represents a significant shift in the political landscape of Akwa Ibom State, which has traditionally been a PDP stronghold since the return to democratic governance in 1999.
Governor Eno's defection is expected to have far-reaching implications for both parties ahead of future elections, particularly as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
The PDP has yet to issue an official statement regarding the governor's departure from their party.
