The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the upcoming 2027 general elections will serve as a referendum on what it describes as the failures of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.

This declaration came during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, where PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the ruling party's handling of insecurity, economic challenges, and overall governance.

Security and Economic Concerns

Ologunagba highlighted the government's alleged inability to address critical national challenges, particularly pointing to rising insecurity across the country. "In two years, over 600 Nigerians have been killed. That's on record. This government celebrates defection like it's celebrating successful policy, that's an indictment," he stated.

The PDP spokesperson also questioned the effectiveness of the current administration's economic policies, specifically challenging the rationale behind the $24.5 billion loan request meant to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

"The president asked for a $24.5 billion loan to cushion the effect of subsidy removal, two years after. Where is the money? We were told subsidy removal would free up funds, where are the results," Ologunagba questioned, adding that over 100 million Nigerians are currently surviving on less than $2 a day.

Positioning as an Alternative

The PDP is positioning itself as a credible alternative to "rescue Nigeria from what he called the APC's misguided policies and propaganda," according to Ologunagba. The party has vowed to hold the government accountable for its shortcomings as the nation approaches the next election cycle.

Ologunagba also condemned what he described as the APC's preference for a one-party state, calling it a threat to Nigeria's democracy. He reaffirmed the PDP's commitment to multi-party democracy and emphasized the importance of robust opposition and accountability in the democratic process.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, this declaration signals the PDP's early campaign strategy of focusing on governance issues and policy implementation under the current administration.
