President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate release of N2 billion for the reconstruction of homes destroyed by recent devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced this during his visit to the affected communities in Mokwa town on Wednesday, where he conveyed the President's sympathies to flood victims.
Presidential Intervention for Flood Victims
"The president specifically instructed me to come to Mokwa to commiserate with the people over the tragedy that befell the town. His heart is with the grieving people of Mokwa," Shettima stated while addressing residents.
The Vice President assured victims that "all issues raised will be addressed by the federal government in collaboration with the Niger government."
Beyond the financial commitment for rebuilding efforts, President Tinubu has directed the Ministers of Environment and State for Agriculture to temporarily relocate to Niger State. This move aims to ensure speedy intervention on issues under the ACRSAL project, with particular focus on flood drainage matters in the town.
Additional Relief Measures
The President has also pledged to donate 20 trucks containing food items to be distributed to those directly affected by the disaster. The distribution will be coordinated with the village head of Mokwa to ensure aid reaches the intended beneficiaries.
During his tour, Vice President Shettima commended the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Mr. Yakubu Garba, and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their prompt response and continued support to the flood victims.
The Mokwa flood has caused significant destruction to homes and infrastructure, with reports indicating that search and recovery operations have been ongoing in the aftermath of the disaster.
