Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced strong concerns regarding the persistent killings in Benue, Plateau, and other regions of Nigeria, emphasizing that the blood of innocent citizens is crying out for justice.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that security and citizen survival must be the primary responsibility of any government claiming to be responsible and compassionate.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi extended his condolences to the people of Benue over the recent tragic incidents in the state.

"Following my earlier remarks on the security situation in Benue State on May 28th, 2025, I would like to once again extend my heartfelt condolences to the good people of Benue State over the tragic and senseless killings that continue to plague their communities," Obi stated.

He described the ongoing violence as not just unacceptable but intolerable, noting that the pain, anguish, and sorrow being experienced across Benue represent "a grave indictment of a nation that is repeatedly failing its own people."

Army Chief's Intervention Welcomed

Obi commended the recent decision by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oloyede, to relocate along with Principal Staff Officers to Benue State. He described this move as "a welcome shift toward prioritizing the security of a region that has endured far too much bloodshed."

"I earnestly pray that this action brings lasting change for the good and resilient people of Benue, who deserve not only protection but also meaningful justice, and the freedom to live, farm, and work in peace without fear," the former presidential candidate added.

The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice. The security and survival of our people must be the foremost responsibility of any government that claims to be responsible and compassionate.

Obi expressed solidarity with grieving families across Nigeria, emphasizing that he stands with them "not just in words, but in the call for urgent, deliberate, and comprehensive action."

The statement concluded with Obi's signature phrase: "A safe Nigeria is POssible."

This statement comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in various parts of the country, with Benue, Plateau, and Kogi states experiencing some of the most severe incidents in recent months.
