The political coalition being formed to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections is experiencing internal disagreements over strategy, according to Dr. Umar Ardo, Convener of the League of Northern Democrats.

Speaking on Arise Television's Morning Show on Wednesday, Ardo explained that the coalition's momentum has slowed due to ideological differences among key stakeholders regarding the approach to opposition politics.

Coalition Divided on Political Strategy

"The coalition is in place, but it's just divided on the basis of ideology. Well, when I say ideology, I mean approach — how to approach the politics," Ardo clarified during the interview.

According to Ardo, the coalition faces a critical decision point with two competing strategies emerging. "Predominant members and even leaders of the coalition are in support of fusing into an existing political party, and another group, which I belong to, is in support of registering a whole new political party," he revealed.

Despite these challenges, Ardo expressed confidence that the coalition would eventually overcome its initial difficulties. "I think the coalition will stand. At the formative stage usually you have these hiccups, but over time, they will shape up," he stated.

High-Profile Opposition Figures Involved

BenriNews previously reported that several prominent political figures are involved in the coalition talks, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governors Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, as well as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Ardo, who supports creating a new political party rather than joining existing ones, expressed strong optimism about the coalition's electoral prospects. "We insist, from our side, that our approach of establishing a new political party by the coalition is the best way to approach this transitional politics, and it is, for me, almost almost certain of victory," he emphasized.

The development comes as various opposition figures continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with President Tinubu expected to seek a second term in office.
