Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed the strategic reasoning behind his appointment of Nyesom Wike as Chief of Staff during his tenure as Rivers State Governor.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television's Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Amaechi disclosed that he deliberately positioned Wike as his Chief of Staff rather than granting his request to serve as Commissioner for Finance.
"I wanted him (Wike) as chief of staff so I could supervise him," Amaechi stated. "Adoke flew all the way from Abuja to Port Harcourt that Wike asked me to make him the Commissioner for Finance and I said no, he has to work under me so that I can supervise him."
The former governor appeared reluctant to engage in further controversy with his political rival, adding, "I'm saying this because I don't want to join issues with children."
Political Rivalry Continues
Amaechi further criticized Wike's political trajectory, suggesting his former aide had orchestrated his own rise to power. "You know, he made himself chief of staff. He made himself governor. He made himself a minister. He made himself local government chairman," Amaechi remarked.
The relationship between the two prominent Rivers State politicians has been characterized by tension and public disagreements since their political paths diverged. Wike, who served under Amaechi's administration, later became governor of Rivers State and currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
This latest exchange highlights the ongoing political rivalry between the two figures who have both played significant roles in Rivers State politics and at the federal level.
