A violent clash between suspected gang members erupted Monday night in the Gangar Ruwa area of Samegu, along Madobi Road in Kano, leaving the local ward head injured and residents in fear.
According to an eyewitness who spoke to BenriNews, the conflict began when gang members accused personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) of killing one of their members.
"The situation got worse quickly, with gunshots heard in the early hours of Tuesday as security operatives arrived to restore order," the eyewitness revealed.
The ward head sustained injuries while attempting to escape from the violent confrontation. Several vehicles parked along the streets were also damaged during the altercation.
Community in Fear as Violence Continues
Local residents reported that the area remains unsafe, forcing children to stay home from school and preventing many workers and traders from going about their daily activities.
"People are afraid to leave their homes. The entire neighborhood is practically on lockdown," said a resident who preferred to remain anonymous for safety reasons.
Community members have called for a stronger response from security forces to prevent further violence and restore peace to the area. The ongoing tension has disrupted normal life in Samegu, with businesses remaining closed and streets largely deserted.
Attempts by BenriNews to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, for comments on the situation were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about gang-related violence in parts of Kano State, with authorities facing increasing pressure to address security challenges in urban areas.
