Former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has made serious allegations that members of Nigeria's political class are behind the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in the country.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today on Monday, Kalu claimed that terrorism is being used as a tool to undermine President Bola Tinubu's administration, similar to tactics allegedly employed against former President Muhammadu Buhari.
"The political class is behind Boko Haram. They are using terrorism as a tool to fight Tinubu, just like they did with past administrations," Kalu stated during the interview.
When pressed to clarify who he meant by the "political class," Kalu pointed to a broad spectrum of influential figures, including politicians, senior civil servants, and wealthy business people.
"People in the political class are the ones fuelling Boko Haram. This is a political war," he emphasized. "Some of them aren't after money, they are after power. They want to tear down the system just to grab control, and that is not how power should be acquired."
The former governor further alleged that the insecurity plaguing Nigeria is politically motivated, claiming that these individuals are not merely seeking financial gain but are attempting to "hijack political power."
Recent Terrorist Activities
Kalu's allegations come in the wake of a recent attack where suspected Boko Haram terrorists planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in nine fatalities.
The timing of these comments also follows a recent warning from the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, who stated that Nigerians are currently living alongside Boko Haram and bandits. Sanusi made these remarks during the 60th birthday celebration of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
While Kalu's allegations are serious, he did not provide specific evidence or name particular individuals allegedly involved in supporting the terrorist group. The Nigerian government has not yet responded to these claims.
Boko Haram has been responsible for thousands of deaths and displacements in northeastern Nigeria over the past decade, with the government struggling to contain the insurgency despite multiple military operations.
