The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kano State Command has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding a recent attack on its outpost in the Gwazaye area of Kumbotso Local Government Area.
According to SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, the command's spokesperson, the incident began on Monday, June 2, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m. when two knife-wielding suspects attempted to snatch a mobile phone from a resident who was on a call.
"According to eyewitness accounts, a member of the local vigilante was in the area while the thug was attempting to snatch the phone. The victim overpowered the attacker, and in the process, the hoodlum sustained a fatal stab wound to the neck," Abdullahi explained.
Mistaken Retaliation
Following the incident, the resident, accompanied by three others from the neighborhood, went to report the matter at the NSCDC outpost in Semegu, also within Kumbotso LGA. Shortly afterward, a group of armed individuals stormed the office in a violent attack.
The attackers apparently believed that NSCDC personnel were involved in the death of the phone snatcher, leading them to target both the complainants and NSCDC staff at the outpost.
Abdullahi strongly denied any NSCDC involvement in the fatality, stating: "For the avoidance of doubt, none of civil defence personnel was a party to the happening. What is certain and for sure is that those involved had attempted to report a phone robbery attack in our office as a security agency at Semegu, but they were violently attacked together with our staff in the area. The NSCDC never maimed neither had they killed any suspected thug in the area."
Investigation Underway
To ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kano State Police Command.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in the area and raises questions about vigilante involvement in crime prevention efforts across Kano State.
BenriNews will continue to monitor developments as the investigation progresses.
