A Mapo Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan has sentenced 30-year-old Pelumi Olusola to three months imprisonment for stealing a plank from a construction site in Lagelu Estate, Felele, Ibadan.
Olusola, who is unemployed, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him during the court proceedings on Tuesday.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Latunji, convicted and sentenced the defendant based on his guilty plea and the evidence presented by the prosecution.
During sentencing, Magistrate Latunji advised Olusola to refrain from criminal activities in the future, warning that he might not receive such a lenient sentence if caught again.
According to Inspector Oluseye Akinola, the prosecuting counsel, security personnel apprehended the convict on May 29 while he was removing the plank from an abandoned construction site.
The prosecutor informed the court that Olusola's actions violated section 390 [9] of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. 2, Law of Oyo State, 2000.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges of petty theft at construction sites in Ibadan and the legal consequences for such actions, even when the items stolen might seem of minimal value.
