A growing coalition of prominent politicians from across Nigeria's North and South is forming to challenge President Bola Tinubu's administration, as social-political activist Aisha Yesufu cautions Nigerians about their role in the developing political movement.

Several high-profile political figures including former Transportation Minister Chibuike Amaechi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have reportedly united in their determination to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Yesufu emphasized that citizens should take an active role in shaping this coalition rather than allowing it to be solely directed by established political elites.

"Dear Nigerians, be the drivers of the coalition. Participate in it. Call the shots! Make demands!" she wrote, adding, "Ask for seats, tickets! While the usual politicians are positioning for the executive positions, position for the legislative position."

Citizen Participation in Politics

Yesufu specifically called on Nigerians to consider who they want representing them at various legislative levels, from state assemblies to the Senate, making these considerations part of coalition discussions.

"Politics should not be left for people who can buy 200 million Naira forms alone," she stated, highlighting concerns about the financial barriers to political participation that often exclude ordinary citizens from the political process.

The emerging coalition comes amid growing dissatisfaction with certain policies of the Tinubu administration, which took office in May 2023. Political observers note that the alliance of formerly opposing political figures signals significant realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu, who gained prominence during the #EndSARS protests and as a co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, has consistently advocated for greater citizen involvement in Nigeria's political processes and governance.
