The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared his intention to lead President Bola Tinubu's re-election campaign in 2027.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Wike indicated he would spearhead the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign efforts for the next general election, particularly in Rivers State.
When questioned about his potential role in the APC's 2027 campaign, Wike responded rhetorically: "I have told you this before, is it because I am in Asiwaju's presidency?"
"Are you not aware I will lead his campaign in Rivers State? You want me to say no?" he added, suggesting his support for Tinubu was already established.
The FCT Minister also expressed confidence in improving Tinubu's electoral performance in the Federal Capital Territory, noting: "Are you not aware that he didn't get up to 10 per cent here, FCT? But he will win here."
Wike, who has maintained that he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite working in Tinubu's APC-led administration, justified his support for Tinubu on the grounds of regional balance in Nigeria's presidency.
"Because I have said the South must produce the president," he explained, underscoring his position on Nigeria's power rotation arrangement.
This declaration comes amid ongoing political realignments in Nigeria as various political figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike's statement further solidifies his alliance with President Tinubu, despite his formal affiliation with the opposition PDP, highlighting the fluid nature of Nigerian political allegiances.
