The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially begun processing registration requests for 110 new political parties, including the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This development comes just a day after INEC had announced that ADA, a platform backed by a coalition of opposition figures, had not yet met the requirements for registration.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu confirmed that the commission had received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties.
"As at Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties," the statement read. "We are diligently processing the requests in line with the procedure outlined in the law as well as our Regulations and Guidelines."
Registration Process Underway
The electoral body has acknowledged all requests received so far, except for six recently submitted applications which will be processed before the end of the week, according to the statement.
Prof. Yakubu emphasized that the commission's handbook containing the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 is available on INEC's official website for interested parties.
The All Democratic Alliance has attracted significant attention as it is reportedly backed by prominent opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, among others.
In a related development, INEC has assured that it will treat all registration requests fairly, regardless of the status of their promoters, as the commission prepares the ground for the 2027 electoral process.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has reportedly advocated for the coalition to adopt the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform instead of pursuing the registration of ADA.
Political analysts view the emergence of new political platforms as a significant development that could reshape Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
