The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has emphatically declared that he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite working in the All Progressives Congress-led federal government.
Speaking during his monthly press briefing on Monday, Wike affirmed his continued allegiance to the PDP while explaining his current role in the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
"I'm in PDP, but when people don't want to learn, impunity will kill you. I'm still in PDP and work hard for this party," Wike stated.
Not Afraid to Challenge the Wealthy
The FCT Minister also made it clear that he takes pleasure in challenging wealthy individuals who believe they are above the law, emphasizing that his approach differs from his predecessors.
"I have found out that most of them didn't have the courage to annoy people, to step on toes – I take joy when stepping on the toes of big men, those who say nothing will happen. I take joy in saying something will happen," Wike declared.
He added, "It makes me happy. You want me to take decisions against the poor people while you, the rich man, think nothing will happen – something will happen. And that's why we are getting results."
Loyalty to the President
Despite his PDP membership, Wike emphasized that his primary allegiance in his ministerial role is to President Tinubu.
"The only person that I owe is Mr. President. This is what I'm doing because I have to support the government and make a difference," he stated.
Wike's comments come amid ongoing speculation about his political future, having accepted a ministerial appointment in an APC-led government while maintaining his PDP membership. His tenure as FCT Minister has been marked by several controversial decisions and reforms in the administration of the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister has recently been in the news for his warnings to property owners in upscale areas of Abuja regarding ground rent payments and his plans to overhaul the FCT transport sector.
