Former Senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani has called on Northern Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu's bid for a second term in the 2027 elections, praising the administration's achievements thus far.
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna on Monday, Sani expressed appreciation for the progress made under Tinubu's leadership, contrasting it with previous administrations from the North.
"For those of us from this part (North) of the country, we appreciate the progress made so far by this present government and for those of them who had the opportunity to do better and they failed, we tell them that it is better they apologise for the wrong they have done to the people of the North," Sani stated.
The former lawmaker urged northerners not to be incited against Tinubu's administration, which he described as "doing far better than the one that came from their side." He reminded the region that Tinubu had previously supported a northern president for eight years in power.
Learning From Past Experiences
Sani emphasized the importance of learning from Nigeria's past challenges, calling on citizens to be cautious of divisive elements who had previously failed to address the region's problems.
"I want to call on the people to caution the elements who had the opportunity to turn the North to paradise but left it as hell but today such elements are crying foul for no reason other than that they have been excluded from the government," he said.
According to Sani, critics of the current administration are primarily motivated by personal interests rather than genuine concern for northern Nigeria or addressing issues like insecurity and governance.
While acknowledging everyone's right to express opinions, he cautioned against rhetoric that could destabilize the country, stating that criticism "shouldn't be done in such a way to burn down the country."
Sani's endorsement adds to growing political discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with other political figures including Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike recently pledging to lead Tinubu's campaign efforts.
