Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and serving as Senate Minority Leader, has raised alarm over the escalating violence against communities in his constituency by suspected armed herdsmen.

In a statement issued on Monday, Senator Moro expressed profound sorrow over the continuous attacks that have resulted in numerous deaths and abductions across multiple local government areas including Apa, Agatu, Otukpo, Ohimini, and Ogbadibo.

"These communities have come under heavy and sustained attacks by marauding herdsmen who kill, maim, and kidnap at will, without any meaningful resistance," the lawmaker stated, describing the situation as deeply troubling.

Senator Moro warned that if not urgently addressed, the worsening insecurity could deteriorate into a full-blown crisis. He called for immediate and decisive action from both the state and federal governments, emphasizing that protecting citizens' lives and property remains a constitutional obligation that must be fulfilled.

Call for Government Action

The visibly disturbed senator extended heartfelt condolences to families who have lost loved ones or had members kidnapped in the ongoing violence. He insisted that citizens must be able to live and conduct their businesses without fear, adding that "that right must be guaranteed."

The Benue South region has experienced recurring security challenges in recent years, with several communities suffering devastating attacks. Recent incidents have reportedly occurred across five local government areas, creating a humanitarian situation that requires urgent attention.

Security concerns in Benue State have remained persistent, with reports indicating that some Catholic parishes in the region have been shut down due to the threat posed by armed herdsmen, further highlighting the severity of the situation.
