Many parents have besieged the Government Special Science Senior Secondary School, North Bank, Uni Agric Road, Makurdi, demanding the release of their children amid escalating insecurity in Benue State.

The panic follows the massacre of over 200 people by Fulani herdsmen in Yelellewata – a community approximately twenty minutes drive from the school.

BenriNews gathered that the school management had previously written to the Ministry of Education requesting security reinforcements before the current academic term began, but no action was taken.

Security Concerns Mounting

A parent, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the school sent a reminder to the Ministry following the kidnapping of students at the nearby Joseph Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM).

"Just last week, suspected herdsmen attacked the host community of the school with several lives lost and the whole community is now deserted," the parent said.

The situation has become more alarming as parents observed cattle grazing within the school premises during the last visiting day, with sections of the perimeter fence behind the school having collapsed.

"The school management should do the right thing by shutting down the school pending when the security situation around the area improves," the concerned parent added.

"Let's avoid the repeat of what happened at JOSTUM or the Chibok and Dapchi girls' scenario here in Benue State," the distraught parent insisted.

The recent violence in Benue has raised significant concerns about student safety in educational institutions across the region, with parents fearing potential attacks or kidnappings similar to previous incidents in northern Nigeria.

As of press time, there has been no official response from the Ministry of Education regarding the security situation at the school.
