The Anambra Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has conducted a successful raid on an illegal mining site at Omambala River in Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area, seizing several pieces of mining equipment during the operation.
State Commandant Mr. Olatunde Maku disclosed this while briefing journalists in Awka on Monday about the command's activities over the past week. The operation, carried out on May 30, was executed by the NSCDC's Mines and Steel Development Unit in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer in Anambra State, Mr. Edet Oku.
"As the team approached the site, all the suspected illegal miners fled the scene, leaving behind some of their mining equipment," Maku stated. "The items recovered include a dredger, two dredging engine pumps, 18 drums, five suction pipes, eight plastic discharge pipes, three jerry cans, a plastic bucket, and a funnel."
According to the commandant, preliminary investigations revealed that while the mining site was legitimately licensed to Mr. Ike Nweke of Trillike Investment Ltd, unauthorized miners had taken over the operation. The site has now been sealed, and authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects who fled during the raid.
Protecting Natural Resources
Maku emphasized that the operation was part of the NSCDC's ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities across the state. "NSCDC is committed to protecting legitimate title holders by sealing illegal sites, preventing revenue loss, and promoting environmental sustainability," he said.
The commandant added that a full investigation has been launched to uncover the extent of the suspects' activities and identify any accomplices. He assured that offenders would face prosecution upon conclusion of the investigation.
Reaffirming the NSCDC's dedication to enforcing the law and safeguarding Nigeria's mineral resources, Maku issued a stern warning to illegal miners to desist from such activities or face legal consequences.
The raid highlights growing concerns about illegal mining operations in Nigeria, which often lead to environmental degradation, loss of government revenue, and security challenges in affected communities.
