The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a comprehensive weather outlook predicting thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
According to the forecast released on Sunday in Abuja, the northern region will experience morning thunderstorms with rains on Monday over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano States. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are expected over Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara States.
For the North-central region, NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms with rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, and Nasarawa States. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with rains will extend to Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, and Benue States.
The southern region is expected to have a cloudy atmosphere with morning rain over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, rain showers are anticipated across Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, and most southeastern and south-south states.
Tuesday's Weather Outlook
On Tuesday, the northern region will experience morning thunderstorms with rains over Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba. By afternoon or evening, thunderstorms with rains will affect Taraba, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Katsina States.
The North-central region will see thunderstorms with rains over the FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa States during morning hours, extending to Kogi, Kwara, and Plateau later in the day.
In the southern region, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom in the morning, with rains spreading across most southern states by afternoon and evening.
Wednesday's Weather Outlook
For Wednesday, NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms with rains over Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba in the northern region. By afternoon or evening, thunderstorms with rains will affect Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Adamawa.
The North-central region will experience thunderstorms with rains over the FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue during morning hours, with similar conditions expected over Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger later in the day.
In the southern region, morning rains are anticipated over Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, with rainfall expected across the entire region by afternoon or evening.
Safety Precautions
NiMet has issued important safety advisories, warning that strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. The agency urged the public to take adequate precautions, including ensuring that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.
The meteorological agency also advised against driving under heavy rain and urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning of their operations.
