The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, has called on residents of flood-ravaged communities in Mokwa Local Government Area to maintain peace and avoid taking the law into their hands following the recent devastating floods that claimed lives and destroyed property.

In a condolence message addressed to the affected communities, particularly Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, Sarkin-Daji expressed deep sympathy over the disaster that submerged buildings and resulted in multiple casualties after hours of heavy rainfall.

"On behalf of the leadership and members of the 10th Assembly, I express our heartfelt sympathies to the affected communities, particularly Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, where several lives were lost and buildings submerged due to hours of heavy rainfall," the Speaker stated.

Government Response to the Disaster

Sarkin-Daji assured residents that Governor Mohammed Umar Bago's administration is committed to providing support and relief to those affected by the disaster. He emphasized that the State Assembly would continue to legislate laws beneficial to Niger State citizens and remain steadfast in supporting Mokwa residents during this difficult period.

"As the state navigates this difficult period, the Assembly will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the necessary support and resources are provided to those affected," he said.

Taking immediate action, the Speaker has directed the House Standing Committees on Environment and Humanitarian Service to collaborate with relevant government agencies to provide support to the victims of the flood disaster.

Ongoing Relief Efforts

According to reports, recovery efforts continue in the affected areas. A separate update mentioned that two more bodies had been recovered, bringing the total death toll to 153, though this figure was not directly confirmed in the Speaker's statement.

The Mokwa flood disaster has drawn national attention, with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu expressing sadness over the incident. President Bola Tinubu has also reportedly sent a delegation to Niger State in response to the devastating floods.
