An Osogbo Magistrates' Court in Osun State has ordered the remand of Taofeek Jimoh at the Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly killing his mother, the court ruled on Monday.

Jimoh, who appeared in court without legal representation, is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of his mother, Taibat Jimoh.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Fatoba Temitope, the defendant committed the alleged offense around 8:00 pm on February 19 in the Oke-Ola area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

Temitope told the court that Jimoh physically assaulted his mother following a disagreement, and the assault subsequently led to her death. The prosecutor noted that the offense contravenes Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. 11, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

Magistrate O. Olatunji, who presided over the case, ordered Jimoh's remand citing the severity of the charge against him. No plea was taken from the defendant during the proceedings.

The case has been adjourned until June 17, 2025, for mention, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged matricide continue.

This case adds to growing concerns about domestic violence and family-related homicides in Nigeria, where such incidents have been reported with increasing frequency in recent years.
