Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos has paid emotional tribute to five former PSG stars who were unable to secure Champions League glory during their time at the club, following the French side's historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Saturday's final in Munich.
The Brazilian defender, who has been with PSG for 12 years, named Thiago Silva, Lucas Moura, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Edinson Cavani, and Angel Di María as former teammates who deserved but failed to win Europe's most prestigious club competition with the Parisian outfit.
"It's a mix of joy, of all the emotions we have spent together. I have suffered but I have grown up with this team," Marquinhos said after the match. "I think of all the players who have come through and not succeeded. My idol Thiago, Lucas, Zlatan, Cavani, Di Maria."
"So many players who have come through here who deserved this and didn't succeed. Now we are here and we are bringing it home," he added.
Historic Achievement Under Luis Enrique
The emphatic victory marks PSG's first Champions League title in the club's history, coming under the guidance of manager Luis Enrique. The achievement is particularly significant for Marquinhos, who has experienced multiple heartbreaks in the competition, including a final defeat in 2020.
"This is the best day of my life. My family have been with me and have been through this with me," the captain continued. "When we arrived, nobody believed we could go this far. It has been 12 years of hardship and suffering."
The triumph represents a watershed moment for PSG, who have invested heavily in pursuit of European glory over the past decade. Despite previously boasting star-studded lineups featuring Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé, it was Luis Enrique's rebuilt team that finally delivered the coveted trophy.
Marquinhos also expressed gratitude to PSG supporters worldwide: "I'm thinking of all the supporters who have been with us, those at the Parc and those around the world. I love you, enjoy it and we are going to enjoy it here."
The victory celebrations in Paris were reportedly marred by clashes that led to hundreds of arrests, according to reports, as fans took to the streets to celebrate the historic achievement.
