The Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday to mourn the deaths of 22 athletes who perished in a tragic road accident while returning from Ogun State.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is currently away on Hajj pilgrimage, issued the directive through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in a late-night statement expressing profound sadness over the incident.

"It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured," the Governor was quoted as saying.

The public holiday is intended to allow citizens to pray for the deceased and sympathize with the bereaved families. The government has also called on Imams and Muslims within and outside Kano to offer prayers for the departed souls.

"On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief," Governor Yusuf added.

The governor has assured that all necessary support will be provided to the grieving families of the victims. The athletes were reportedly part of a sports contingent representing Kano State at a national sports event in Ogun State.

This tragic incident has drawn condolences from across the nation, including from President Tinubu, who described the accident as "devastating." Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has also expressed his condolences.

The accident marks one of the most tragic sporting-related disasters in recent Nigerian history, with the state now in mourning as it prepares to honor its fallen athletes.
