Former Kano State Governor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has expressed profound shock over the tragic death of 22 members of the Kano sports team who perished in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The fatal incident occurred when the vehicle conveying the contingent plunged into a bridge at Dakatsalle, near Kura local government area in Kano State.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje described the incident as a "heartbreaking tragedy" that represents a loss not only to the bereaved families and people of Kano State but to the entire nation.
"This is a deeply sorrowful moment. These young athletes travelled in the spirit of unity, patriotism, and excellence to represent our state and nation. To lose them in such a tragic and untimely manner is a devastating national loss," Ganduje stated.
The APC National Chairman characterized the deceased athletes as promising and dedicated youths who embodied the future of Nigerian sports and were the pride of Kano State.
Call for Investigation
Ganduje called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and urged authorities to implement stronger safety protocols to protect Nigerian athletes during future national assignments.
He extended his condolences to the Kano State Governor, the families of the deceased, and the wider Nigerian sports community, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed and comfort for those left behind.
"May Almighty Allah (SWT) grant the families the strength to bear this irreparable loss and grant eternal rest to the departed souls," Ganduje concluded.
The tragic accident has cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory return from the National Sports Festival, leaving the sports community in Kano and across Nigeria in mourning.
