An artisan working on a faulty electrical line experienced an electric shock in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, officials have confirmed.
The incident occurred around noon near the West African Examination Council (WAEC) office in the Ijokodo area of Ibadan when the worker, who was attending to the Ijokodo 11kV feeder, came into unintended contact with an adjacent high-voltage line.
Eyewitnesses reported that it took several minutes for colleagues to bring the victim down from the pole after the shock occurred. The worker was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has clarified that the incident was not a fatal electrocution as initially feared. In a statement released on Saturday evening, Mrs. Angela Olanrewaju, Coordinating Head of Corporate Services at IBEDC, confirmed that the victim was not an IBEDC staff member but an artisan engaged by a third-party contractor.
"The affected individual received immediate medical attention, was treated, discharged on the same day, and is currently in good health," Olanrewaju stated.
IBEDC used the opportunity to issue a safety warning, emphasizing that all electrical installations within their network are hazardous and should only be accessed by properly trained and authorized personnel.
"We urge all contractors and members of the public to strictly observe safety protocols when operating near electrical infrastructure," the statement added.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about electrical safety practices among contractors working on power infrastructure in Nigeria, where accidents involving electrical workers are not uncommon.
Further details about the victim's identity and the contracting company have not been disclosed as of the time of this report.
