A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe, has launched a scathing attack on former Rivers State Governor and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, describing him as having "serious character issues" and "very bad temperament."
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Igbokwe recounted personal encounters with Amaechi that allegedly demonstrated his difficult personality. "If you have had personal experience with former Governor Rotimi Amaechi as I did at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, in 2015 when PMB came to campaign in Lagos, you will not take him seriously at all," Igbokwe wrote.
The Lagos APC stalwart further detailed another incident involving Amaechi at Agege Stadium in Lagos, where the former minister reportedly asked Arewa leaders to leave the podium during a campaign event for then-presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari. According to Igbokwe, the leaders refused and challenged Amaechi.
Response to Amaechi's Recent Comments
Igbokwe's criticism appears to be a direct response to Amaechi's recent statements during his 60th birthday celebration in Abuja. The former minister had claimed that he and most Nigerians are currently experiencing hunger, and suggested that an opposition coalition has the capacity to remove President Bola Tinubu from power.
Amaechi also alleged that Nigerian politicians quarrel over the sharing of the country's resources, a comment that seems to have further provoked Igbokwe's response.
This public spat highlights growing tensions within the APC, particularly between loyalists of President Tinubu and those perceived to be aligning with opposition forces. Amaechi, who served as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has increasingly positioned himself as a critic of the current administration.
The exchange comes amid reports of another APC member, former Environment Minister Abdullahi, resigning from the party over personal reasons, suggesting potential fractures within the ruling party as Nigeria moves closer to the next election cycle.
Political analysts view these developments as early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various factions within the APC beginning to emerge as the party navigates its post-Buhari identity under President Tinubu's leadership.
