The Muslim Community of Oyo State has called on the state police command and other security agencies to ensure the prosecution of individuals who attacked a woman wearing a niqab (Islamic face veil) in Ibadan.
In a statement released on Saturday and made available to DAILY POST, the community condemned the attack on Hajia Shukuroh Olapade, which occurred on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in the Oje area of Ibadan.
The statement was jointly signed by Alhaji Kunle Sanni and Alhaji Abidemi Siyanbade, Chairman and Secretary of the Muslim Community of Oyo State, respectively.
The Muslim leaders described the incident as "an orchestrated plan by enemies of Islam to unleash crisis where there is none" and a breach of the dignity of womanhood.
"Attack on a Muslim sister, Hajia Shukuroh Olapade on Wednesday 21st May, 2025, adorning Niqab, in line with the regulations of Islam, is an orchestrated plan by enemies of Islam, to unleash crisis, where there is none," the statement read.
The community further appealed to government authorities and security agencies to take swift action on the matter.
"We hereby call on governments; Directors of DSS and; Heads of other Security Agencies, to identify the perpetrators, unravel their grand plan and nip the crisis in the bud," they urged.
The attack has raised concerns about religious tolerance and the safety of Muslim women who choose to wear full Islamic veils in public spaces.
As of the time of this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
The incident comes at a time when religious harmony remains a critical aspect of peaceful coexistence in the diverse state of Oyo.
