The Oniroko of Iroko, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), a prominent traditional ruler in Oyo State, has joined his ancestors. The monarch passed away in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.
Prince Dolapo Abioye, speaking on behalf of the Opeola-Oniroko family, confirmed the transition of the traditional ruler in an official statement released to the public.
"It is with a deep sense of sorrow and profound respect that I write to formally announce the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), the Oniroko of Iroko, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025," the statement read.
According to the family spokesperson, the late monarch's body will be laid to rest today, Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 10:00 am. Additional details regarding the burial arrangements are expected to be announced later.
