Authorities in Abia State have apprehended 53 individuals for violating environmental regulations during the May 2025 monthly sanitation exercise in Umuahia, the state capital.
The arrests were carried out by members of the Task Force who found the defaulters either loitering or conducting business activities during the designated cleanup hours, contrary to the state's basic environmental laws.
When brought before the Environmental Mobile Court, several of the arrested individuals claimed they were unaware of the exercise, stating they had not heard the radio announcements made earlier in the week regarding the cleanup.
The Presiding Magistrate, Onyinyechi Ibekwe, exercised leniency in some cases, discharging three individuals—two based on health concerns and one who was identified as a student.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, expressed satisfaction with the participation of residents who complied with the directive and cleaned their surroundings.
"The present government is interested in preventing diseases and providing sound health for the people," Ogbonna stated, noting his delight at the improved environmental outlook of Abia cities.
The Commissioner urged all residents to maintain clean environments beyond the monthly exercise, emphasizing the connection between environmental cleanliness and public health.
The monthly sanitation exercise is part of Abia State's ongoing efforts to improve environmental conditions and promote better hygiene practices among residents.
