Over twenty people have lost their lives and approximately fifty houses have been submerged following devastating floods that hit two communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency.
The affected communities, Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, were overwhelmed after heavy rainfall on Wednesday, triggering flash floods that swept through residential areas.
Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the casualties while speaking to NTA. He revealed that rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of the report.
Among the survivors, a woman and her two children are currently receiving medical treatment at Mokwa General Hospital. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Governor's Response
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has expressed his condolences to the victims of the natural disaster. In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor commiserated with affected families and communities.
This disaster comes during Nigeria's rainy season, when flooding frequently affects communities situated in low-lying areas or near water bodies. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency continues to coordinate relief efforts in the affected communities.
Authorities have not yet provided details about evacuation plans for remaining residents or long-term support for those who have lost their homes in the disaster.
