Renowned Nigerian singer and producer Cobhams Asuquo has revealed that he works "five times harder" than his colleagues in the music industry due to his visual impairment.
In a candid interview with Hip TV, the 'One Hit' hitmaker discussed the challenges he faces as a blind musician and how he has turned these challenges into motivation for excellence.
"My awareness of myself as a blind person makes me work five times as hard [as others]. Because I realised that there is a stereotype around a blind person and the general assumption is that you are incapable. And because of that, I work hard to show that I can be capable of so many things," Asuquo explained.
The award-winning producer emphasized the importance of embracing one's reality rather than living in denial. He urged people living with disabilities to draw strength from their conditions instead of seeking euphemistic terms to describe them.
"I think it's totally okay to be blind. I think it's also okay to identify where you are and what you are dealing with so that you are not living in denial and looking for all kinds of euphemistic ways and names to call it," he stated.
Asuquo clarified that he is completely blind, not visually impaired. "I'm not visually impaired, I don't have a little bit of vision. I'm completely blind, I can't see a thing. And that's totally alright. I'm good with it," he affirmed.
The musician, who has produced hits for numerous Nigerian artists and received a UN appointment, expressed pride in his achievements despite his condition.
"I think it makes it even more special that I have been able to live the life that I've lived and I've been able to do the things that I've done," Asuquo reflected.
Through his remarkable career and openness about his experiences, Cobhams Asuquo continues to inspire many Nigerians and challenge perceptions about disability in the entertainment industry.
