A suspected internet fraudster, commonly known as a "yahoo boy," has caused a fatal accident that claimed the lives of four people in Ughelli, Delta State on Tuesday.
The tragic incident occurred along the Oteri-Ovwor Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area when the suspect, driving a Mercedes Benz GLK at excessive speed, knocked down a commercial motorcycle operator and his three passengers. All four victims died on the spot.
According to reports, the driver also hit a young schoolboy who was returning home. The boy sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Ughelli.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the suspect abandoned his vehicle at the scene and fled immediately after the accident. The Mercedes Benz GLK was left behind as the driver escaped to avoid arrest.
When contacted for confirmation, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, did not respond to messages or phone calls at the time of filing this report.
This incident adds to growing concerns about reckless driving in the area, particularly among young people suspected to be involved in internet fraud activities who often drive luxury vehicles at dangerous speeds on local roads.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect who is currently at large.
