Fast-rising Nigerian singer Ayo Maff has revealed that he moved out of his parents' house in Shomolu, Lagos, at the age of 16, driven by a desire to create better opportunities for his family.
The 19-year-old artist made this disclosure during a recent interview with Hip TV, where he reflected on his humble beginnings and the challenges that shaped his journey in the music industry.
"As the first child of my family, I left home at 16 because it was not easy in there," Ayo Maff explained. "Life in Shomolu is hard, fun and also exciting. Without living in Shomolu I wouldn't have the experiences of singing about them. I wouldn't have truly seen reality of life that shaped me."
The singer, who gained prominence following the release of his hit single 'Dealer' featuring Fireboy DML in 2023, emphasized that his decision was motivated by his responsibilities as the eldest child.
"I looked around and realised that I had to go out and make it for these people (his family). So, I just leave to stay with my friend for one year and a few months," he continued.
Despite his young age at the time, Ayo Maff was determined to pursue his dreams while maintaining a connection with his family. "My mum was concerned when I was leaving, but I assured her that I would be coming to check on them," he added.
The artist's story highlights the challenging circumstances many young talents face in Nigeria's entertainment industry, often making difficult personal sacrifices in pursuit of success and better living conditions for their families.
Ayo Maff's breakthrough came with 'Dealer,' which has helped establish him as one of the promising voices in Nigeria's vibrant music scene.
