Suspended Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has reaffirmed his commitment to the oath of office he took two years ago, vowing to remain focused on serving the people despite the ongoing political crisis in the state.

In a statement marking the second anniversary of his May 29, 2023 swearing-in, Fubara described the occasion as "a moment for sober reflection and renewed determination" while acknowledging the political turbulence that has engulfed the state.

"Today marks exactly two years since I took the oath of office as your 7th democratically-elected Governor," Fubara stated. "On May 29, 2023, I was sworn in following the clear and overwhelming mandate you gave me during the March 18, 2023 elections. Once again, I thank you for the trust, honour, and privilege to lead our beloved State."

The suspended governor noted that despite significant changes in the state's political landscape over the past two years, he has "remained steadfast and focused, guided by the oath I took and the solemn promise I made to always put Rivers State first."

Political Crisis and State of Emergency

The political crisis in Rivers State erupted following a disagreement between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The conflict affected the state House of Assembly and nearly escalated into a full-blown security crisis.

In response to the deteriorating situation, President Bola Tinubu intervened by suspending Fubara and declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State for six months. Currently, the state is under the leadership of a Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd).

In recent developments, Fubara met with Wike in an attempt to seek reconciliation and restore peace in the state. Following the meeting, Wike declared his readiness for peace, referring to the suspended governor as his "son."

Despite the challenges, Fubara expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their support, which he said has given him the courage to continue pursuing unity and healing.

"I pledged to protect and promote our collective interests and ensure you enjoy the real dividends of democracy and good governance. That commitment remains unshaken," he affirmed. "For your sacrifices, contributions, and the roles you've played in your respective capacities, I say a heartfelt thank you."
