The South-South Youths Initiative has launched a scathing attack on Tony Okocha, the factional Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, accusing him of deliberately sabotaging peace efforts to maintain personal benefits derived from the ongoing political crisis.
The youth group's criticism comes in response to Okocha's recent statements that suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara's "sin" would not be forgiven if he attempts to join the APC, claiming the governor cannot join the party "through the back door."
Personal Gain Over Public Welfare
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Imeabe Saviour Oscar, National President of the South-South Youths Initiative, alleged that Okocha secured his positions as the state representative of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and factional APC State chairman specifically because of the political instability in Rivers State.
"His refusal to support peace initiatives in Rivers State due to personal benefit from the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State is unacceptable," Oscar stated.
The youth leader further claimed that Okocha fears losing his current positions if peace is restored in the state, adding that his actions are deliberately aimed at making governance difficult for Governor Fubara while "continuing to heat up the polity."
Calls for Resignation and Investigation
Oscar described Okocha's prioritization of personal interests over the welfare of Rivers people as "shameful" and called for his immediate resignation from all positions. The youth group also demanded a thorough investigation into Okocha's role and activities within the NDDC board.
"Mr. Tony Okocha's prioritization of personal gain over the welfare of Rivers State citizens is shameful. His actions hinder efforts to resolve the crisis, perpetuating instability and suffering for innocent citizens," Oscar emphasized.
The political crisis in Rivers State has continued to escalate following Governor Fubara's suspension, with various factions and interests emerging in what observers describe as one of the most intense political battles in the state's recent history.
As of press time, Okocha had not responded to the allegations made by the South-South Youths Initiative.
