The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 235 vehicles across Lagos for indiscriminate parking, environmental violations, and general traffic infractions, according to a statement released by the agency on Thursday.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Tofiq revealed that the vehicles were seized during a comprehensive clean-up enforcement operation targeting critical traffic corridors throughout the state.
"This expansive operation, meticulously coordinated under the leadership of Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, commenced today with full deployment across high-density zones, notably Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi," Tofiq stated.
The impounded vehicles included 38 private automobiles, 156 painted Volkswagen commercial buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses (Korope)/tricycles, five haulage trucks, and 17 inter-state passenger buses. All were seized for various violations of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
Serious Environmental Violations
In a particularly serious incident, five articulated trucks were intercepted on the Adeniji Adele Bridge while illegally offloading livestock—including rams, cows, and abattoir waste. The agency described this as "a grave environmental defilement" that compromised both public safety and the structural integrity of the bridge.
"The drivers, in manifest contempt for sanitation laws, are now subject to imminent judicial proceedings," the statement added.
According to LASTMA, the offenses committed by the impounded vehicles ranged from unlawful encroachment upon pedestrian pathways and obstruction of vehicular flow to establishment of illegal terminals and reckless disregard for established traffic regulations.
LASTMA General Manager Bakare-Oki emphasized that the clean-up enforcement drive is an integral part of the Lagos State Government's broader urban regeneration initiative aimed at restoring order to the state's roads and public spaces.
This operation comes as part of ongoing efforts by LASTMA to enforce traffic regulations and maintain order on Lagos roads, following previous warnings issued to commercial drivers regarding traffic violations.
