The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive traffic diversion plan in preparation for the upcoming Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit scheduled to take place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotel and Suites on Victoria Island.

According to a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the traffic advisory is designed to facilitate smooth vehicular movement and enhance security during the high-profile regional gathering.

The summit is expected to attract heads of state, senior diplomats, and key stakeholders from across the West African region, necessitating special traffic arrangements in the Victoria Island area.

Motorists traveling through Victoria Island, particularly along Ahmadu Bello Way, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, and surrounding areas, are advised to use alternative routes to avoid potential gridlock during the event.

The diversion plan also affects traffic flow from Kofo Abayomi Road, Bonny Camp, and the Independence/McEwen Bridge corridor. The government has mapped out diversions through adjoining streets that link to Lekki, Lagos Island, and the Mainland to minimize disruptions.

Commissioner Osiyemi noted that officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other enforcement agencies will be strategically positioned across affected routes to manage traffic, provide directions, and ensure minimal inconvenience throughout the summit.

"We urge motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and exercise patience as Lagos hosts this important regional gathering focused on strengthening economic and diplomatic ties across West Africa," the statement read in part.

The ECOWAS summit represents a significant diplomatic event for Nigeria as it brings together leaders from across the sub-region to discuss matters of mutual interest and regional development.

Residents and visitors in Lagos are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and stay updated on traffic advisories throughout the duration of the summit.
