Abia State Governor Alex Otti has revealed that parts of Isuikwuato and Umunnochi local government areas were under the control of bandits before his administration took office, forcing residents to flee their communities.
Speaking during celebrations marking his second year in office at Umuahia Township Stadium on Thursday, Otti disclosed that his administration established a joint security team codenamed "Operation Crush" which successfully dislodged the criminal elements from these areas.
"Indigenes of the invaded communities fled their homes while those residing in the cities were afraid to return home," Otti stated, highlighting the severity of the security situation he inherited.
Security Achievements and Financial Commitments
The governor commended the Nigerian Army, police, and other security agencies for their collaborative efforts in securing Abia State, pledging continued logistical support from his administration to maintain peace and order.
In addition to security improvements, Otti revealed that his government has spent over N40 billion in clearing arrears of salaries and pensions accumulated by previous administrations.
Environmental Transformation
The governor expressed satisfaction that Abia, previously known as "one of the dirtiest states in Nigeria," has undergone significant environmental transformation. He urged residents to maintain the new culture of cleanliness that has been established.
"Abia which was known as one of the dirtiest states in Nigeria has now been cleaned up," Otti stated, encouraging citizens to embrace and sustain these positive changes.
Looking ahead, the governor announced that numerous projects completed by his administration would be commissioned for public use starting from June 2025.
The second-anniversary celebration provided a platform for the governor to highlight his administration's achievements while thanking Abia citizens for their continued support.
