At least eleven people have been killed and 117 others abducted following a devastating attack by bandits on Danmuntari village in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Tuesday evening.
Among the victims were a nursing mother and her infant less than two weeks old, who were both shot and killed during the raid, according to survivors who spoke with reporters.
Eyewitnesses reported that the heavily armed attackers arrived at approximately 4 p.m., surrounding the village from all directions on motorcycles and opening fire indiscriminately as residents attempted to flee.
"The bandits came on motorcycles from the east, west, north, and south, catching everyone off guard," said one resident who witnessed the attack.
Another villager who escaped to Baina, a neighboring settlement, explained that residents were preparing to go to their farms when the gunmen struck without warning. He confirmed that 117 villagers were forcibly taken away by the attackers.
Survivors have expressed frustration over the lack of security intervention before, during, or after the attack. "We did not get any help. No one came to our aid, and no official has spoken to us since," lamented one of the escapees.
Local sources indicated this is the third time Danmuntari has suffered such an attack, with bandits repeatedly invading the area in large numbers on motorcycles.
As of the time of this report, neither the Kebbi State Government nor the state police command has issued any official statement regarding the incident.
The attack on Danmuntari adds to the growing list of security challenges facing communities in Nigeria's northwestern region, where banditry and kidnapping for ransom have become increasingly common in recent years.
