Three people have lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Wednesday morning, officials have confirmed.
Mr. Adekunle Ajibade, the South-West Area Commander of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), reported that the accident happened around 7:45 a.m. and involved five vehicles.
According to Ajibade, the crash was caused by a speeding cement truck with no registration number that experienced brake failure while traveling towards the tollgate from Sango Ota.
"The corpses of the victims have been deposited at Ifo General Hospital, Ogun, while the survivors are also receiving treatment in the same hospital," Ajibade stated.
Safety Concerns Highlighted
The TRACE official used the opportunity to advise motorists on road safety measures, emphasizing the importance of vehicle maintenance.
"Motorists should always ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before putting them on the road," he urged. "Drivers should also stop excessive speed and reckless driving to prevent unnecessary loss of lives."
Ajibade confirmed that all affected vehicles have been cleared from the expressway to restore normal traffic flow in the area.
The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, a major route connecting Lagos and Ogun states, has witnessed several accidents in recent years, often attributed to overspeeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and reckless driving.
Road safety agencies continue to emphasize the need for drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and maintain their vehicles properly to prevent such tragic incidents.
