A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Chief Bode George, has declared that the party has been successfully revitalized, dismissing speculations about its demise.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today following crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings aimed at resolving internal crises, George emphatically stated: "We have already done the resurrection today. An iroko tree doesn't die, this party is an iroko tree because the tap root is so deep."
The elder statesman expressed renewed optimism about the party's future, describing the recent meetings as reminiscent of the PDP's peak years. "I left the chambers feeling reinvigorated," he remarked, adding that the gatherings represented "the realisation of the failures and things that we have done."
Call for Selfless Leadership
George highlighted that some politicians within the party had strayed from the vision of PDP's founding fathers due to selfish interests. He revealed that the Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, had urged members to embrace selflessness over self-interest.
"This party is not a party for one individual, no individual can claim ownership of this party," George emphasized, reinforcing the collective nature of the political organization.
Commitment to Opposition
When asked if he would consider defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the octogenarian politician responded with a vehement "no." He criticized President Bola Tinubu's policies and expressed concern about the economic hardship facing Nigerians under the current administration.
George also contested the legitimacy of APC's victory in the 2023 presidential election, claiming that "the electoral process was not in good shape."
The PDP, Nigeria's main opposition party, has faced internal challenges since losing the 2023 presidential election. These recent NEC meetings appear to be part of efforts to strengthen the party's position ahead of future electoral contests.
