South African singer Tyla has claimed the prestigious Favourite Afrobeats Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), triumphing over Nigerian music heavyweights Wizkid, Tems, Rema, and Asake.
The ceremony, held on Monday night at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, saw the 'Water' hitmaker continue her impressive streak of international recognition, further cementing her position in the global music scene.
This victory marks a shift in the category's history, as Wizkid had previously won the inaugural Favourite Afrobeats Artist award in 2022, riding on the success of his hit song 'Essence.'
While Tyla celebrated her win, the night's biggest triumph belonged to Billie Eilish, who swept all seven of her nominations, including the coveted Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year awards for her work on 'HIT ME HARD AND SOFT' and the single 'BIRDS OF A FEATHER.'
In a surprising turn of events, music industry titans Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande left empty-handed, failing to secure wins in any of their nominated categories.
The ceremony also marked a significant moment for Eminem, who ended a 15-year drought at the AMAs by winning both Favourite Male Hip-hop Artist and Favourite Hip-hop Album for 'The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).'
Other notable winners included Beyoncé, who dominated the country music categories with her 'COWBOY CARTER' album, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars for their collaboration 'Die With A Smile,' and SZA, who took home the Favourite Female R&B Artist award.
The 2025 AMAs highlighted the growing global influence of African music, with the Afrobeats category continuing to gain prominence on one of music's biggest international stages.
