Afrobeats superstar Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has expressed his desire for better governance in Nigeria and across the African continent during a significant cultural event in the United States.
Speaking at the premiere of his documentary "Wizkid: Long Live Lagos" at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Friday, the Grammy Award-winning artist highlighted governance as a critical area needing improvement in African countries.
Hopes for Africa's Future
"I always wish for more success for the whole culture; from music to film to sports. And I wish for better government," Wizkid stated during the event. "I'm just a very positive human being regardless of any thing. I wish the best for everyone making amazing music and amazing art from Africa."
The Starboy boss emphasized the importance of African creatives sharing their unique stories with the world. He acknowledged that his journey from humble beginnings to international stardom is not exclusive to him alone.
"I hope that every artist from Africa gets to tell their story like this. Because I'm not the only one from that hustle, we all came from there. I feel like everyone deserves the chance to tell their story like this."
The documentary "Wizkid: Long Live Lagos" chronicles the artist's rise to global fame while highlighting his deep connection to Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital. The film offers viewers an intimate look at the cultural influences that shaped his musical journey and his impact on the global music scene.
Cultural Ambassador
Wizkid's comments come at a time when his influence extends far beyond music. As one of Africa's most successful musical exports, his platform allows him to draw attention to issues affecting his homeland while celebrating its rich cultural heritage.
The artist has consistently used his global platform to promote African talent and culture, becoming an unofficial ambassador for the continent's creative industries. His remarks about governance reflect a growing trend among African celebrities who are increasingly vocal about socio-political issues affecting their communities.
Despite acknowledging challenges with governance, Wizkid maintained an optimistic outlook for Africa's future, emphasizing his belief in the continent's potential across various sectors.
