Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda has declared that he no longer considers himself part of the secular music industry, revealing a significant shift in his artistic direction.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, Shmurda explained that his music has evolved beyond following industry trends.

"At this point, I feel like I'm not in the [secular music] industry anymore. In that sense that I no longer make music that follows trend. I no longer do songs for trends. I don't think I'm in that space anymore," the singer stated.

A New Musical Purpose

Shmurda elaborated on his new direction, emphasizing that his current focus is on creating music with deeper meaning and purpose.

"I just want to make music for the reason I want to do it, which is to uplift people's souls, making people self-conscious and being aware of who they are. And, helping people go through life with my music," he explained.

The artist noted that this approach sets him apart from many of his contemporaries in the Nigerian music scene. "I don't really think any of my colleagues want to do that," he added.

"Even if I want to make trendy music, I do that and quickly return to my purpose. And I feel like that's the balance." - Bella Shmurda

While Shmurda hasn't completely abandoned creating commercial music, he emphasized that he now has a clearer understanding of his artistic identity. He mentioned that he might still produce trendy songs occasionally but would always return to his core purpose of creating conscious music.

This revelation comes as part of what appears to be a period of reflection and redirection for the artist, who has previously spoken about financial stability in the Nigerian music industry and the challenges of celebrity status.

Shmurda's shift toward more conscious music represents a notable evolution in his career, potentially signaling a new chapter for the artist known for hits like "Cash App" and "Vision 2020."
