Political and public affairs analyst Mojeed Dahiru has predicted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on an irreversible path to extinction, stating that the party "will die completely" and is unlikely to survive beyond 2027.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Dahiru addressed the deepening crisis within Nigeria's main opposition party, describing the PDP as "a dying party" suffering the consequences of what he termed a "mortal sin" committed during the 2023 electoral process.

"The Bible says the wages of sin is death. So the PDP is dying because it committed a mortal sin in 2023," Dahiru stated. "When the PDP jettisoned zoning prior to the 2023 presidential election, when it was supposed to cede the ticket to the South, which was supposed to be its most consistent support base, and opted to pick a northerner, the PDP committed a mortal sin."

The analyst's comments come amid escalating tensions within the party, highlighted by a recent failed reconciliation meeting in Abuja and the sealing of the PDP National Secretariat over alleged unpaid ground rent exceeding N7.6 million. The action was taken by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, headed by Nyesom Wike, a prominent PDP member who has been at loggerheads with the party leadership.

Dahiru specifically pointed to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's candidacy as a critical factor in the party's decline. "When Atiku happened to the PDP, he developed a wicked problem... It was Atiku's submission that killed the PDP effectively," he asserted.

The analyst further explained that the current actions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who recently vowed to "fight to the finish," are direct consequences of decisions made by the party's northern faction led by Atiku.

"Wike would not have intended to be an undertaker [taking the PDP to its grave] but you see, there are causes and effects. To every action, there is equal opposite reaction. So the actions of the northern flank of the PDP, led by Atiku and others, is the reaction we are seeing by Wike," Dahiru explained.

The PDP Board of Trustees has reportedly convened an emergency meeting to address the sealing of its National Secretariat and other pressing issues threatening the party's cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.

Dahiru concluded with a grim forecast: "So these actions and inactions will invariably lead to the final burial of the PDP... I don't see PDP surviving as a party beyond 2027."
